The month of Ramadan is not merely a holy month for Muslims. In the history of Islam, a number of major events that are very decisive and meaningful for Muslims occur this month. At least, there are 11 important events that occurred in Islamic history, either classical or modern. What are the events?
Here are 11 Historical Islamic Events in the Month of Ramadan.
1. The Liberation of Mecca (Fathul Makkah)
What is Fathul Makkah? The event of Fathul Makkah is an event in which the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions succeeded in mastering Mecca and destroying the idols around him. So the Ka'bah is holy again. This event stems from the Hudaybiya treaty of 628 AD This is an agreement between the Muslims and the Quraysh. This agreement occurs when a group led directly by the Prophet Muhammad was to perform the pilgrimage in the House. However, the Quraysh see it as a threat. If the people of Medina, who in fact are the rivals of the infidels of Quraish, came to Makkah, then what would people say? For this reason, the leaders of Quraish with all efforts to formulate a strategy, namely binding the Muslims in an agreement so as not to be free to visit Makkah. And there was Hudaibiyah agreement. The fear of the infidels of Quraish is quite natural, because after the Prophet and several hundred friends emigrated from Makkah to Yathrib (Medina), between the Muslims and the Quraysh almost always the inevitable warfare. In a 20-day siege by 10,000 Quraish troops against Madinah in 627 AD, the Holy Prophet and the 3,000 Muslims succeeded in defending Medina.
The contents of Hudaibiyah agreement include:
First, a ten-year truce
Second, Muslims are allowed to enter Mecca the following year, staying there for three days with only a weapon.
Third, work together in a case that brings to the good.
Fourth, the Quraysh who fled to Islam should be returned to Makkah.
Fifth, the Muslims who fled to Makkah were not returned to Medina,
Sixth, both sides may establish cooperation with other tribes but should not be helpful in terms of warfare.
Finally in 630 precisely on the 10th of Ramadan 8 H, the Prophet Muhammad and 10,000 troops moved from Medina to Makkah, and then controlled Mecca as a whole without any bloodshed, as well as destroying the idols placed in and around the Kaaba.
2. The Moon Descended the Qur'an
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says in the Qur'an: "(The appointed day is a) The month of Ramadan, the month in which the Qur'an begins to guide us as a guide for man and the explanations of that clue and the distinction (between the right and the one Vanity) ... "(Surat al-Baqarah: 185)
Imam Ibn Kathir explains: "Allah SWT praises Ramadan among other months, for He has chosen him among all the months as the month upon which the great Qur'an is revealed." As Allah specified Ramadan as the month of the revealed Qur'an, it has been mentioned by Hadith that in the month of Ramadan also other books of Allah revealed to the Prophets before the Prophet Muhammad.
Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal in his Musnad narrated: "The sheets (shuhuf) of Prophet Ibrahim were revealed at the beginning of the night of Ramadan and the Torah was revealed on the sixth of Ramadan, and the Gospel was revealed on the thirteenth of Ramadan, while the Qur'an was revealed on the twenty-fourth of Ramadan (Ahmad in Musnad, and expressed hasan by Shaykh Al-Albani in As-Silsilah Ash-Shahihah, 1575)
3. The War of Badr
On Friday 2nd Ramadhan the 2nd year H happened the first war in Islam known as Badr War. Badar is the name of a place in a valley that lies between Medina and Makkah. The Islamic army controls the strategic location by controlling the water resources in the area.
This war involves 313 members of the Islamic army facing up to 1,000 fully armed Makkah polytheists. In this war, the Islamic army wins the battle with 70 polytheists killed, 70 more captive. The rest ran away.
This war was a remarkable one when the less-numbered, weak army from the point of completeness and fasting in the month of Ramadan won the battle of Badr War. This proves that fasting is not the cause of Muslims being weak and lazy to the contrary to try to achieve the pleasure of Allah. The man who strives for the pleasure of Allah must reach the promised victory.
"Surely God has helped you in the battle of Badr, when ye are (the) of the weak, therefore fear Allah, that ye may be grateful for Him" (Surah Al-Imran: 123)
